How One Bank Increased Lighting Compliance by 700%—Without Breaking the Budget

What if you could significantly improve outdoor facility safety, strengthen your brand image, and elevate overall curb appeal through better lighting—without paying for full redesigns at every site?

Recently, GMR had a bank client with a nationwide portfolio that needed lighting assessments performed at various sites. They wanted to take stock of each site’s lighting status, as they were concerned that the sites might have poor lighting. The goal was to bring their sites into compliance with their company’s standards. Lighting is important for safety, risk exposure reduction, and providing an inviting atmosphere for customers. They wanted to make sure they were attentive to these ends.

For a project such as this, typically the bank will contract with a provider to do lighting surveys and site lighting designs to improve the lighting conditions. These lighting surveys provide a snapshot of lighting conditions on whether these conditions were up to code, and then full designs to improve the lighting and achieve compliance.

However, this client had some budget limitations, which hampered their ability to order the full site lighting designs. They needed a cost-effective solution that could deliver the results they wanted on a shorter timeline.

This is where GMR enters the picture. Rather than creating full site lighting designs, we offered another product, the Lighting Design Markup, to allow them to achieve their goals of improving their lighting conditions AND staying within budget. These markups are focused on targeted areas of the site that can have an improvement in the lighting levels without adding light poles and providing full site design. This allows for portions of the site to have improved foot-candle readings to advance the overall lighting conditions of the site. The Lighting Markup does not guarantee full site lighting compliance, but it does provide an improvement to the overall lighting conditions and can subsequently achieve full site lighting compliance (but is not guaranteed like what is offered with the full site lighting design).

GMR began the process by reviewing their sites by performing lighting surveys, including their ATMs and after-hours depositories, to assess their lighting conditions. This was done at no cost to the client. Then, for the sites that had lighting deficiencies, the markups were performed.

Through the Lighting Design Markup, GMR provided the client with only the information they needed, and at a significantly reduced cost, allowing them to make lighting refinements to improve safety, security, customer experience, and to reduce their risk exposure.

The outcomes of the client using the markup product are:

  1. Minimized risk. Lighting improvements based on the results of the markups led to the number of readings meeting compliance to grow by 700%, lowering their risk exposure.
  2. Reduced cost. The project saved the client money (including construction, lighting markup solutions are $5,000 to $23,000, and full lighting design solutions are $57,000 to over $100,000), allowing them to stretch their facility management budget.
  3. Focused scope. The project delivered only the essential data needed for the client to make informed lighting decisions
